What We Do

National Leadership Program

The Yanalangami National Cultural Leadership & Empowerment Program runs annually, bringing together 16 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women from around Australia to invest in their inherent leadership skills as sovereign women.

We know that our communities thrive when Indigenous women have the opportunity to pursue their dreams and goals. That is why Yanalangami invests in Indigenous women, providing leadership tools, training, professional skills and a culturally safe space for our women to share, connect, learn, heal and grow together. When we are given the tools to empower ourselves, we can inspire and empower those around us.

How it works

Each year, coinciding with International Women’s Day, the Yanalangami: Strong Women, Strong Communities national campaign launches, calling for applications and nominations from deadly women who aspire to strengthen their leadership skills, confidence and cultural networks. Our Aboriginal Advisory Council (AAC) selects participants based on their commitment to community, previous leadership experience and their energy for learning and growth. Selected participants then undertake the 6-week Emerging Changemaker or 10-week Community Changemaker online program, building their national women’s leadership networks and walking their individual learning journeys.

The program consists of:

  • Weekly activities and pre-reading tasks
  • Weekly Yarning Circles
  • Guest speakers who share their stories of leadership
  • Mentoring and Coaching
  • Careers mentoring
  • In-person Graduation
  • Invitation to join the National Yanalangami Network

Program Streams

We offer two program streams, designed to cater to the specific needs of each Changemaker:

Emerging Changemaker

For women ready to start their journey of self-love and leadership.

  • Runs for 6 weeks + introduction session.
  • Weekly pre-session materials, including some self-reflection activities, reading and/or videos (about 2 hours per week).
  • Weekly yarning circle session featuring a deadly guest speaker (2 hours per week).

Community Changemaker

For women already on their leadership journey (personally, professionally or within Community), who want to develop their skills, networks and confidence.

  • Runs for 10 weeks + introduction session (Community Changemakers undertake the first 6 weeks alongside the Emerging Changemakers).
  • Weekly pre-session materials, including some self-reflection activities, reading and/or videos (about 2 hours per week).
  • 6 weekly yarning circle sessions featuring deadly guest speakers (2 hours per week).
  • 4 professional development sessions (yarning circle format) designed to enhance business or managerial skills, such as grant writing and financial wellbeing (1.5 hours per week).
