Walking Together in Leadership: Reflections from the Kimberly Aboriginal Women’s Council Leadership Roundtable

Tranby CEO, Dr Belinda Russon, and Lead Yanalangami Facilitator, Aunty Bernice Hookey, travelled to Yawuru Country, Rubibi (Broome, WA) for the 2025 Kimberley Aboriginal Women’s Council (KAWC) Leadership Roundtable held from Monday 6 – Thursday 9 October. This year’s theme, “United in Purpose: Governance, Solidarity and Voice” brought together over 120 Aboriginal women leaders and non-Indigenous allies in a powerful gathering.

“We are deeply grateful for the invitation to join the Kimberley Aboriginal Women’s Council (KAWC) Leadership Roundtable under the theme United in Purpose: Governance, Solidarity, and Voice as an Indigenous Ally and Observer.

On Monday 6 October, I had the honour of presenting at the KAWC Leadership Pre-Roundtable event, sharing the heart and purpose of the Yanalangami: Strong Women; Strong Communities program with an intimate gathering of women from across the Kimberley, Western Australia, and the East Coast.

The journey began with a powerful Aboriginal Cultural Immersion, setting the tone for the days ahead. We were welcomed by the Traditional Owners of El Questro, Injiid Marlabu Calls Us, the Ngarinyin people, at Yawardani Jan-ga, where we experienced a deeply moving and authentic Welcome to Country. This experience reminded us of the importance of understanding cultural and spiritual practices passed down through generations, even as Indigenous visitors.

Day 1 of the roundtable opened with a Smoking Ceremony, followed by the gathering of over 120 strong Aboriginal women and a small group of non-Indigenous allies. Listening to the wisdom of Elders was deeply grounding, and we were especially moved by all involved in bringing together such a powerful three days. Thank you to the incredible KAWC Team.
It was truly special to be sharing space with Yawuru Yanalangami Changemakers who are now stepping into leadership roles as Directors, Chairs, or business owners. Witnessing their journey into self-determination and hearing their stories as panel members and speakers was both exciting and empowering.

Throughout the roundtable, we heard from many inspiring speakers, including the beautiful keynote by Patron Aunty June Oscar from the Wiyi Yani U Thangani (WYUT) Gender Justice Institute. The stories shared across the days reflected grit, determination, and an unwavering commitment to empowering women, despite funding challenges or circumstances beyond control.

The roundtable featured rich and important discussions on the political environment, lobbying and advocacy, and global movements for the Human Rights and Social Justice of Indigenous Peoples. The launch of the Lateral Love Campaign principles marked a powerful beginning to this collective leadership journey.

Days 2 and 3 continued to build on this momentum, offering personal and deep insights into the role of an Observer, respecting boundaries, holding space, and allowing the focus to remain on the voices and leadership of Kimberley Aboriginal women.

A standout moment was when the KAWC’s and Aboriginal women from surrounding WA regions walked a line to thank Indigenous and non-Indigenous allies. It was a moving gesture that embodied the spirit of unity: together, we become stronger.

The week concluded with the KAWC Gala Awards on Thursday evening. It was a beautiful celebration honouring phenomenal, strong Aboriginal women. The awards recognised their leadership, contributions, and the legacy they continue to build for past, present, and future generations.

This experience was a profound reminder of the strength found in listening, learning, and walking together with lateral love.”
